Merchant Quarter may include the Adelphi

by Sam on January 27, 2010

Adelphi could benefit by being part of Aberdeen’s new Merchant Quarter.

I met up recently with Gary Atkinson, of the Carmelite Hotel, one of the people behind the Merchant Quarter (a business initiative which I mentioned in a previous post).

Gary explained the idea behind it was to create a connection between the two shopping hubs of Union Street and Union Square. There’s a feeling that people will park up to go shopping in one place and if they choose to go to the other then they’ll use either Market Street or Bridge Street to get there, bypassing the Green and all the shops, pubs and streets in that central ‘block’.
Merchant Quarter connection

Gary said it was felt Adelphi was outside of this central block, but that it could become part of the Merchant Quarter in the future. I think there’s huge potential in this initiative and it would be exciting to be part of it.

The Adelphi Action Group will discuss this at its next meeting and consider inviting Gary along to speak about the Merchant Quarter.

Come back to the site to read more about Adelphi’s progress.

Adelphi is not a place for children

by Sam on January 17, 2010

“I’ve even seen people taking a sh*t…just over there,” said a resident of Adelphi pointing to the pavement which his living room window overlooks.

“I’ve seen them pissing there – everytime I look out of the window, almost. Something needs to be done about that. It’s disgusting. I can’t let my children look out of the window because I never know what they’ll see.”

I was taking pictures of the cobbles in Adelphi – see the video slideshow in the box on the front page – when the resident approached me and asked what I was doing. After we established that we both live in Adelphi he began his account of all the things he’s seen people doing outside his window.

“I saw the guy drawing that the other day, as well,” he said pointing at some graffiti on the wall opposite his flat. (See the picture below.)

I lovGraffiti in Adelphie living in Adelphi…but some people really treat it like a toilet or a dark alley to do as they please (crime, anti-social behaviour, prostitution etc).

Why is Adelphi not in the Merchant Quarter

24 December 2009

Somehow it got under my radar…Aberdeen city centre has now got its own Merchant Quarter. What an excellent idea. Anything that adds depth to the city is good in my book.
I was strolling back down Union Street, heading for my car and home on Christmas Eve, when I noticed a new public map attached to [...]

Lighting for Adelphi – like Ashton Lane

20 December 2009

I’ve been waiting for the opportunity to visit Ashton Lane, in Glasgow, to see the way it’s lit. Lighting in Adelphi was a big issue during the last meeting of the Adelphi Action Group, so when I was in Glasgow yesterday for an Xmas night out I took the chance to stop by and have [...]

Lane gates for Adelphi… or not

10 December 2009

Aberdeen City Council community safety manager Neil Carnegie left a comment on this site about Council plans to introduce a lane gate at Adelphi Lane. Here’s what he said:

Comic book artist John McCrea visits Adelphi

7 December 2009

Adelphi-Regeneration.co.uk came into being because of all the negative things that have been happening in the street, but there’s a feeling that we should be focusing on positive things – promoting what’s happening here as well. In other words, who wants to read about the bins and the litter and the anti-social behaviour? People are [...]
